ACCIDENTAL COURTESY, MUSICIAN DARYL DAVIS AND HIS QUEST TO CHANGE THE FACE OF WHITE SUPREMACIST AMERICA

Chicago Bluesman, R&B musician, keyboardist, actor, lecturer and author Daryl Davis has played with such musicians as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Hornsby, and Bill Clinton. But besides his musical career, he has another vocation, one that is both seemingly dangerous and seen as controversial by some: in his efforts to improve race relations, he engages in personal connections with members of hate groups and the Ku Klux Klan. Davis’s motto is to establish dialogue: “When two enemies are talking, they’re not fighting.” http://worldonanote.com/accidental-courtesy-musician-daryl-davis-and-his-quest-to-change-the-face-of-white-supremacist-america/

The Middle East and Central Asia have a lot in common musically and the coming together of artists from diverse regions can lead to a sound that while cohesive, is yet fresh and innovative. Such is the case for the latest recording Hawniyaz (meaning “two or more people who need each other”) by Kurdish Persian kamancheh (spike fiddle) virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor in collaboration with Kurdish Turkish singer Aynur, Azerbaijani jazz pianist Salman Gambarov, and German-born Kurdish tenbûr (long-necked lute) player Cemîl Qoçgirî. Unlocking The Cage

UNLOCKING THE CAGE MOVIE REVIEW

Under the law, animals are considered objects or “things” rather than sentient intelligent beings with rights. Although repeated scientific studies have shown the complexity of animals’ intelligence and their emotional lives, animal welfare laws still fall short of protecting them from confinement, cruelty, abuse, and basic rights. Unlocking the Cage is a smart and brilliantly edited documentary following animal rights lawyer Steven Wise, founder of the legal team Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) in their efforts to break down the legal walls that separate non-human animals from humans. THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS  IS A DEEPLY ENGAGING MOVIE EXPLORING THE STORY OF YO YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE AND ITS COMPANION CD SING ME HOME, A TESTIMONY TO THE BEAUTY OF CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATIONS.

“Every tradition is the result of successful invention… Human beings grow by being curious and receptive to what’s around them. A lot of people are scared of change, and sometimes there’s reason to be fearful. But if you can welcome change, you become fertile ground for development.”

This is just one of the many insightful quotes from the movie The Music of Strangers: Yo Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble. This outstanding music documentary by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet from Stardom, Best of Enemies), follows the musical journey of legendary cellist Yo Yo Ma and the international collective of virtuosi and wondrous musicians he founded, The Silk Road Ensemble. Ma “fell” into the classical music career because of his prodigious gifts made apparent early in his life. Despite success and fame, from early on, Ma has always been on a quest to connect deeper with other musicians from different traditions in his search for that universal language that creates change.
